School is Here!

Thanks SO much to everyone who came to visit us all summer for our summer reading program, we hope you had fun because we sure did! Enjoy your new books and backpacks. Here are just a few pictures from our fun summer!

There is not much going on here at the library as we make our way into August. Here is some upcoming events for September and October that may interest you:

September: Friday Morning Story time will resume in September. Time is to be announced, it will be for children who are not in school.

October: Annual Quilt Show and Book sale will be going on the week/weekend of Columbus Days! This year we will be having a special quilting presenter if you would like to sign up.

We will have more information on these events soon and will keep you updated here and on our facebook page! Have fun at school!

Astronomy Program TODAY

Make sure to bring your kids and join us for our Astronomy Program today from 2-4PM! This will be our final summer reading program and will be hosted by former NASA astronomer Kevin Manning!

“Kevin is a gifted astronomer, having worked as a consultant with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory launched on the space shuttle with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and other ground-based observatories. Kevin won national and international awards in his field, was both a Wright Fellow and an Einstein Fellow, and did some work with Brookhaven National Laboratory. Besides the numerous workshops he’s presented over the years at libraries, observatories, and science centers, some noteworthy ones include those made at Tufts University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, the National Science Teachers Association’s National Convention, American Association for the Advancement of Science Breakfast with Scientists, and the National Parks Service.”

Astronomy Program and Fair Week

Good afternoon! Here is an update on what’s going on in the next few weeks before school starts!

This Friday, August 1st, from 2-4PM will be our FINAL summer reading program featuring special presenter Kevin Manning. It’s going to be a blast! Make sure to return your sheets with books read on Friday along with your name and age so that we can hand out your special summer reading prizes!

Also, next week from August 5-9 will be the annual Columbus Fair, we will be closing at 5PM on those days so make sure to come in early to grab your books! We will be open our regular 10-3 on Saturday.

Nutty Professor June 25th

Thanks to everyone who has attended our summer reading program so far this year, we’ve had an amazing turnout! It’s been a blast and thanks so much to all the community and businesses who have donated to help buy supplies. We are extremely appreciative!

Just a reminder that this week there will only be ONE children’s program and it will be at 10AM on Wednesday June 25th, downstairs. The Nutty Professor will be presenting a Science Show for all the kids so make sure to stop by!!

Summer Reading has Begun!

Good evening,

Our summer reading program has officially begun, starting today! It was rather rainy and stormy out this morning, so we cancelled the children’s program this morning but did have some patrons show up. Anyone who received our message and did not show up, please feel free to bring your kids in tomorrow at 10AM to enjoy the program with the school age children.

We will be reading a few books, creating Einstein hats, and our project will be Elephant Toothpaste. Stop in to have some fun!

Also a reminder that this Saturday is knitting, so feel free to join us!

We now have a list of events for our Summer Reading Program starting the first week of June! Copies of the dates and times can be found at the front desk of the Columbus Public Library if you’d like to pick a few up!

Pre-K (2-5) programs will be held Thursdays at 10:00AM. The Teen Program (13+) will be held at 1:00PM on Thursdays, and the School Age (6-12) Program will be held at 10:00AM on Fridays.

The program will begin the first week of June and continue until August 1st which will conclude with an Astronomy Program and Guest.

Computer classes have started!

Kayla’s computer classes have started!

Classes include a Beginners: Word, Internet Explorer, Google, Email, etc. offered on Thursday, May 15 at 2:00PM and a Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, etc on Tuesday, May 20th at 2:00PM and Thursday, May 22nd at 2:00PM.

Right now these times are lenient other than the days. Friday’s may be open, we will keep you updated. If 2:00PM does not work for you, just talk to us and we will try and work something out. If there is anything in particular you would like to learn or like to see please don’t hesitate to let us know and feel free to bring your personal laptops as well. If you have some random questions about technology stop by and we will try
to help! Let your family members know as well!

Tornado Policy 2014

Just an update on our tornado policy: The Library is not a designated Tornado shelter, if you are looking for a shelter please visit any of these locations in Columbus:
*First Christian Church: 128 W Elm
*Cherokee County Court House: 110 W Maple
*Park School: After School Hours Only

In the event of severe storms at the library –

Tornado Watch: Patrons may continue to use the library but be cautious of the weather, especially kids.

Tornado Warning: Patrons will be asked to leave and the library will be locked and closed.

Tornado Sirens: If a warning is followed by a siren or sirens sound before a warning, patrons must either leave the property to take shelter or may follow staff downstairs to our designated safety area. Staff will check property and once everyone is in the proper area, the library doors will be shut and locked.
